Choosing a projector for classrooms
A classroom projector has to stay readable with the lights on and the windows open, all day, for years. That means plenty of brightness, a sensible throw distance, and low running costs.

| Room | Aim for |
|---|---|
| Small classroom, blinds down | 3,000 – 3,500 lumens |
| Normal classroom, lights on | 3,500 – 5,000 lumens |
| Lecture theatre or large hall | 5,000+ lumens |
Short throw stops shadows
With a short-throw projector mounted close to the board, the teacher can stand at the board without casting a shadow or looking into the beam. It also suits smaller rooms.
Resolution for text and slides
WXGA (1280×800) is fine for slides in small rooms. For spreadsheets, fine text or larger screens, choose WUXGA (1920×1200) or Full HD.
Running costs
- Laser and LED projectors need no lamp changes — fewer interruptions and lower costs over the years.
- Lamp projectors cost less to buy; budget for replacement lamps.
- Check the connections you need: HDMI for laptops, and LAN for central control in larger schools.
