Short throw & ultra short throw projectors

A short throw projector creates a large image from close to the screen, so presenters and teachers don't walk through the beam or get light in their eyes. Ultra short throw models sit just above or below the board.

How close can it be?

Distance from the screen = throw ratio × picture width.

Type (throw ratio)Distance for a 2.2 m (≈100 inch) wide picture
Standard (about 1.5:1)about 3.3 m
Short throw (about 0.5:1)about 1.1 m
Ultra short throw (about 0.3:1)about 0.6 m

Where short throw makes sense

  • Classrooms with a whiteboard or interactive board — no shadow from the teacher.
  • Small meeting rooms and huddle spaces where there's no room to place a projector far back.
  • Exhibitions and retail displays where people walk close to the screen.

Frequently asked questions

Do short throw projectors need a special screen?

No — they work on a normal screen or a smooth white wall. Ultra short throw models give the best result on a flat, rigid surface, because ripples in a pull-down screen are more visible at steep angles.

Can I mount it on the wall above the board?

Yes. Short throw projectors are usually wall- or ceiling-mounted close to the screen; ask us for the right bracket in your quotation.

Is short throw brighter or dimmer?

Brightness is the same idea as any projector — check the lumens. Because the beam is short, the picture is often more uniform and less affected by people moving around.
